"The solution to pedestrian deaths isn't "defensive walking," as NPR says, but investment in public transit. Don't give us advice on how best to play Frogger on roads full of texting drivers, give us buses that give those drivers a safer place to text."

No, Defensive Walking Isn't The Solution For Road Deaths - Jalopnik
It's victim-blaming, it's bull, and it's not the solution we need.

Good look at profit-seeking vs. everyday fandom... "If you have an all-you-can-eat-and-drink spread waiting for you, there is no need to pop into the old bar or the family-owned pizza shop across from the stadium. It separates fans and cuts into the shared experience."

I love all these responses and statements. The sociology of people in regions vs made-up states (lines on a map) is fascinating. Other examples: Missouri with two big regions each split across an artificial border, Chicagoland essentially reaching across 4 states…
Oklahoma and Texas should be considered their own separate geographic area, because nothing around them is similar.
OK/TX region (which i think should be considered it’s own thing), north florida (which is more like georgia than stereotypical florida), denver/mountain west, pacific northwest

Unbelievably sad.

They have 60 days to leave.

Yes. Worth watching.

TL;DR Sheriff's office sent out alerts *on Facebook* (for anyone online at 5:30am) but not to cell phones or other real-time alert systems.

Sheriff says he'll look into it.

But I did get just get a phone alert about someone who shot one law officer a state away, and it even said there’s no credible threat the guy is in Oklahoma…
"The Texas county where nearly 100 people were killed and more than 160 remain missing had the technology to turn every cellphone in the river valley into a blaring alarm but local officials did not do so...as river levels rose to record heights...a Washington Post examination found."
Kerr County did not use its most far-reaching alert system in deadly Texas floods
Local officials used the system more than two days after the recorded height of the floods.

Side note - my lovely wife specified the blue upholstered bar chairs in this photo in 2009. Got yelled to directly by Clay Bennett who wanted to make sure they’d last. They certainly have. Also, she designed the Thunder locker room at that time… our little claim to helping this happen.
