The revival of the Klamath River & its watershed over the past 14 months—after the completion of the biggest dam-removal project in US history—is one the most hopeful stories I know in our hope-stripped age.
Magnificent @bengoldfarb.bsky.social essay on it here.

It is very nearly the tenth anniversary of that brief moment when, for 2 or 3 days, British newspapers remembered refugees are desperate human beings who need our help, rather than scum that it's okay to threaten with violence.

It’s still hard for me to believe that after so many years of deranged posts like this, we’ve still never had a serious national conversation about this man’s mental health.

The U.K. fishing industry - weaponised & then betrayed & then abandoned, by Johnson, Farage & the rest of them - is better off under Starmer’s deal than it was under Johnson’s. That’s not an opinion. It’s counting. Anyone claiming otherwise is a liar.

Coverage of idiots claiming ‘betrayal’ or ‘surrender’ isn’t just bad journalism, it’s a dereliction of our duty to explain things. I’d actually forgotten just how bad it got but here we are, straight back to treating liars & spivs like authorities of equal weight to experts & honest brokers.

Brexit was a referendum on whether the UK should leave the European Union.

The UK has left the European Union. Referendum fulfilled.

If the people bleating about "Brexit Betrayal" wanted the Referendum to enshrine their pet policy preferences, they should have included them in the question.

We should do this
Portugal is taking online disinformation and fake news seriously. As part of a broader attempt to encourage media literacy, it’s offering 15-18 year olds a free digital subscription to a range of respected newspapers and magazines as well as online upstarts that don’t spread lies. (Monocle)

Got round to reading Farage two page “manifesto” in yesterday’s Mail. Populist slogans/unfunded promises strung together in a piece designed to portray 🇬🇧 as third world. But how about this for nerve from Mr Brexit? “The casual lies and careless attitudes of our political class have let people down”.

This winter I finished writing a full-length choral requiem for the Sycamore Gap tree, called The World Tree.
The Finnish composer Matthew Whittall is setting it to music now.
Premieres in Helsinki in November—sung by Helsinki Chamber Choir—then 🤞 travel to UK.
