Our next trip is to Glen Doll, in the Angus Glens area of the #Cairngorms National Park. Our trip in 2018 was one of glorious blue skies one day and misty with snow falling the next - it's a great area to explore!
We have a programme of monthly weekend trips for 2026 - why not join us?

J G Ballard on the South Bsnk Show , twenty years ago. I first found his work in the SF section of the local library when /i was ten or so, and and got hooked on the atmospherics of the first three novels. Later, called by the vast temporal resonances of the far night sky... youtu.be/8LosxrbL3sU?...

Last Friday and Saturday I went nordic skiing in the Clashindarroch Forest for the first time. There were mixed results. Yes, I enjoyed spending time with friends in a beautiful place, but an increasing weariness from the day job has made me irritable. It didn't help that I'd lost all my limited confidence in step turning and controlling long skis on descents.

I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while: here’s @davidheb.bsky.social on the incomparable Nina Allan’s latest, A Granite Silence:

“In her latest novel, Allan turns her attention to a historical murder case: The many worlds that spiral out from one tragic event.”

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

A delightful piece about Wittgenstein’s “left-handed pages.”

(Which would be right-handed pages for me, but I’ve learned to accept that we live in an anti-leftist society.)

Yesterday Ryan from Third Circle Coffee in Aberdeen posted to Instagram a video clip of his new speaker and amp setup with an ambient electronic record playing. I sarcastically heckled in the comments that it needs more acid. Today, as I walked in on my lunch break, a compilation record from the same blindly purchased haul of records was playing called Adventures in Acid.

1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵
