The dems were much further left in the 40s. Guaranteed income for old people, price controls, minimum wage laws were created for the first time. The government directly hired people to do work via the wpa.
It got them control of the house for almost 50 years, and a president who had four terms.

I guess here on Bluesky it's controversial to note that the Democrats, once the majority across this country, were reduced to national minority (in stages, from 1968, to 1980, to 2016) by moving left.
