It's Canadian Thanksgiving, and I'm super-thankful for these kind words.

“A charming tribute to the unrelenting and unconditional acceptance a dog gives.”
– Mike Boldt

“We could all stand to learn to love like a dog loves. Kids do it best, and every kid is going to fall for this book.”
– Adam Rex

Just a reminder, “Epstein” is the name of the sex trafficker.

The president is called “Epstein’s monster.”

True confession: I'm a Canadian writer, but the u's in colour, flavour, etc can kiss my butt. I think the American spellings were and are an improvement.

I am a mill town boy with no patience for unnecessary letters. And a #kidlit author. And a pretentious university grad. I contain multitudes.

The structure of Federalism and separation of powers is brilliant and worth preserving, but unfortunately it requires a critical mass of serious, well informed citizens to maintain. No power structure ever devised can resist a stampede of idiots.

It started with IF A BUMBLEBEE LANDS ON YOUR TOE, a book that helps readers see how mindfulness and nature connections can help with anxiety. 🐝 🧚‍♂️ 🦊
BUTTERFLY SEA, its companion, depicts the story of two nature explorers, each with their own unique agenda, and the wonder of discovery. 🦋 🌊 🌼 #Libsky
Two great books that go great together.

Both are beautiful, poetic, and instructive. Both explore big feelings about little creatures.

Author @booksbycindy.bsky.social sees them as companion books and I totally agree.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

If you are in the lower Vancouver Island area on Saturday, November 21 consider coming to the Cedar Hill Holiday Market. I will be there with other local picture book makers and other artsy people!

This works great for lots of things (personal relationships especially, as an available alternative to telepathy). I ask a lot of questions, and when other people ask me something, I try to share what I know from basic principles, with context, specifying the limits of my knowledge & confidence
The actual secret to why I know stuff is that I ask a question any time I don’t understand literally anything. I don’t care how simple it is. Anybody who makes fun of you for asking a simple question likely doesn’t know the answer either

An all-too-common mistake is inferring the sexuality of historical figures based on contemporary standards that didn’t apply back then. For example, in the 1970s it was normal for a cop, a biker, a Native American, a construction worker, and a cowboy to be friends. It didn’t mean they were gay.
