My local library got a copy of Extraction from @triofrancos.bsky.social — it starts with a description of the Atacama desert and salt flats in Chile and how a colonial narrative of emptiness justified extraction of mineral wealth. Made me dig out an old photo album from 2002 when I was there.

Riofrancos: Global South countries can leverage their resources toward their own development and interests, not just exports. We are seeing new forms of collaboration between China and the Global South: Chinese firms set up mfg sites there and building industrialization (e.g. solar panels) locally.
