Public streets for public transit

For the bus fans, a @countyconnection.bsky.social #4 bus!

There's currently a proposal to simplify this downtown loop route to improve reliability and frequency, details and how to comment at countyconnection.com/2025/

CO2 emissions estimates from public information rank FCEB buses poorly due to most H2 coming from steam reformed natural gas

It would be helpful if @rideact.bsky.social staff could share full lifecycle CO2 emissions estimates as part of Zero Emission Vehicle Program

bsky.app/profile/traf...
Diesel bus emissions: 2.69 kg CO2/mile.
H2 Fuel Cell (steam reforming): 2.55 kg CO2/mile
H2 Fuel Cell (electrolysis): 1.46 kg CO2/mile
H2 Fuel Cell (67%/33% mix): 2.19 kg CO2/mile
Battery-electric: 0.47 kg CO2/mile

With zero carbon electricity, electrolysis drops to 0.03 kg CO2/mile and BEB to 0.

Thank you for taking the time to do this analysis

3. Messer recently filed an application to truck "biogas" steam reformed H2 from Las Vegas to Emeryville to supplement the "biogas" powered electrolyzer

1. Messer trucks in natural gas steam reformed H2 from a plant in SoCal for $10.58/kg. Likely 0% renewable: actransit.legistar.com/LegislationD...

2. Onsite electrolyzer powered by landfill "biogas" provides the required 33% "renewable" portion: www.energy.ca.gov/sites/defaul...

A very important point. AC Transit uses "Grey Hydrogen" to power their fuel cells which is created by reforming methane into hydrogen and releasing the resulting waste CO2 into the atmosphere

This process releases more CO2 than burning the methane directly

We are asking @rideact.bsky.social to reconsider their current ZEV plan that could result in reduced service for riders

And to delay ZEV timeline until they either have the funds to afford running more expensive FCEBs or infrastructure to effectively operate BEBs

Purchasing BEB or Diesel instead of FCEBs are better both for riders and the climate

AC Transit powers FCEBs by reforming methane into hydrogen which releases more CO2 than burning diesel does, and it is just not economical to switch to Renewable Electrolysis

The range of BEBs has substantially increased since 2022 with Gillig now offering a 686 kW battery pack, which is 55% larger than the 444 kW in the current fleet

This could increase BEB's range from 130mi to 200mi which is closing in on FCEB's 300mi
September 24, 2025 at 11:06 PM
The 33%-75% higher operating costs for FCEBs over BEBs could result in reduced service without an increase in operating revenue

For AC Transit's 22.3M annual vehicle revenue miles, FCEBs could cost upwards of $27.5M/year to operate than BEBs with FCEBs costing $3.13/mi and BEBs costing $1.90/mi
September 24, 2025 at 11:06 PM
Existing FCEBs have poor availability at 43% and 64%, compared to recent BEBs at 87% and 81%, and diesel at 91%

With 64% availability replacing 152 Diesel buses (~$500k/bus) would require over 200 new FCEBs (~$1.7M/bus) to maintain current service levels!

Most of your fellow transit riders DO NOT know that the transit services they rely on are on the chopping block and that they can take meaningful action to help prevent the cuts.

Help get the word out to your neighbors, friends, family and fellow transit riders!
