3. Messer recently filed an application to truck "biogas" steam reformed H2 from Las Vegas to Emeryville to supplement the "biogas" powered electrolyzer

1. Messer trucks in natural gas steam reformed H2 from a plant in SoCal for $10.58/kg. Likely 0% renewable: actransit.legistar.com/LegislationD...

2. Onsite electrolyzer powered by landfill "biogas" provides the required 33% "renewable" portion: www.energy.ca.gov/sites/defaul...

A very important point. AC Transit uses "Grey Hydrogen" to power their fuel cells which is created by reforming methane into hydrogen and releasing the resulting waste CO2 into the atmosphere

This process releases more CO2 than burning the methane directly

The 33%-75% higher operating costs for FCEBs over BEBs could result in reduced service without an increase in operating revenue

For AC Transit's 22.3M annual vehicle revenue miles, FCEBs could cost upwards of $27.5M/year to operate than BEBs with FCEBs costing $3.13/mi and BEBs costing $1.90/mi

Existing FCEBs have poor availability at 43% and 64%, compared to recent BEBs at 87% and 81%, and diesel at 91%

With 64% availability replacing 152 Diesel buses (~$500k/bus) would require over 200 new FCEBs (~$1.7M/bus) to maintain current service levels!

AC Transit is considering the purchase of 47 Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Electric Buses (FCEB) costing over $1.7M per vehicle!

We are concerned this will worsen service for riders because 2018 and 2022 FCEBs have proven to be unreliable and expensive to operate

The agencies are vague about the "San Mateo Bridge Express Bus project," but it's a capital project so it's at least stuff like queue jumps & signals on the approaches. Pic from MTC/ABAB presentation tonight where they voted to drop the proposal from the plan recommendations

City is looking into replacing the old ones w/ these which are
1) more durable, harder to vandalize, and have lower maintenance costs
2) nice looking
3) potentially easier to install in more places
But the city needs to direct funding toward that to speed up the roll out. We all need to speak out!

City Staff says one day they'd like to replace shelters w/ something like this, but the program being discussed is NOT "remove old shelters so as to replace & upgrade them." The city has a small budget, so they should do removal/replacement/upgrade bit by bit & not remove all shelters now

WestCAT service is down since 2019. This redesign will seek to optimize use of that service to serve existing and new riders.
