To sum up this thread, given recent events in the Chicagoland area due to ICE activity, for the safety of all attendees, especially international attendees, I am calling on @furfest.org to ban tactical gear & modern police/military costumes from the con space

the modern military gear at furry conventions is already tasteless but seriously Do Not Bring That Shit To Chicago. For the comfort and safety of others and yourself. Locals will not look on you kindly for wearing that, you will get whistles blown at you and video taken of whatever you are doing

Last month, another furry convention, BLFC in Reno, banned tactical gear & other modern police/military costumes before the con. This came amid a mass shooting at their host venue this summer

People have asked me why I don’t go to this con or that, and it’s because I‘m poor and have exclusively worked low paying part time jobs so I had time to make comics.
The longer I’m out of school the more insane it feels that I had a professor tell me I could make a rent check at a comic fest

Many full time creatives have “invisible safety nets” like bread-winning partners, trust funds, external support, etc. No shame on anyone, but it creates a false vision of success. The cost of going to cons alone on top of hoping to eat as a freelancer are untenable, IMO.
When people hear that I'm returning to part time work they often ask "are things not going well with your art?"
The problem really is things are going well, but the world is so unstable that I long for some consistency and income that I don't have to pay quarterly taxes on
