Fantastic fucking energy.

Side note hiring a game designer that started in comms is short-hand for hiring a designer that 𝖚𝖓𝖉𝖊𝖗𝖘𝖙𝖆𝖓𝖉𝖘 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖋𝖚𝖑𝖑 𝖕𝖑𝖆𝖞𝖊𝖗 𝖊𝖝𝖕𝖊𝖗𝖎𝖊𝖓𝖈𝖊.
It's good to be back.

Listen to me, nobody is ready for what I have up my sleeve.

Passing up on me while I'm available is self sabotage

games that don't need to make money, games that need to make money, and games that need to make shitloads of money have to be discussed in different ways and flattening the distinctions between them doesn't work.

Switch 2's possible mouse mode is COOL and all BUT any dev will be frothing at the mouth for more RAM.

Death to this screen.

Death to countless nights optimizing memory access.

Back in 2021, PMG reported on the unseen games industry crunch taking place at outsourcing studios in SE Asia.

Since then, the companies we looked at have continued to work on some of the biggest games in the world, without any push to improve the conditions of the artists doing that work. (1/7)

It occurs to me, after reading posts getting it spectacularly wrong, that there are a lot of misconceptions over how game studios organize and, in particular, who makes the actual decisions about what ends up in your game. Much of it is by folks who don't *try* to get it... but not all, surely. 1/🧵

The best order of operations for any mid-scope indie game that requires funding is:

- Build it quickly & quietly assuming you'll self-publish
- Pitch to everyone
- If unsuccessful, put out a store page & start marketing
- If successful, publishers will come back to you
- If not, continue as-is

As with every sales break-down of a released game, this one is invaluable.

ESPECIALLY because it's a smaller (if still excellent!) title, it's so much more common to find public numbers on mega-hits which are more often outliers than the norm.

Thankyou Jo!
Been busy so I nearly forgot 😅 but here's the sales stats for Echo in Nov!

With the Catalog Fall Sale event, the game did way better than I expected in it's second month!

Not to mention proprietary platform support;

Small studios have 3.5 reasonable options for Switch/PS5/XBOX and they're all WILDLY different engines.
Just so we're all clear: moving away from Unity is a HUGE cost for small devs. Learning new systems for alternatives is an immediate, *massive* problem.

Your "scoff, why would anyone even use Unity any more?" hot take is not particularly grounded in practicality, I'm afraid.
