🏛️ Today, I'm chairing a hearing addressing one of the most fundamental quality-of-life issues facing our city: sufficient and equitable access to safe, clean, and functional @dcdpr.bsky.social recreational spaces.

Big news: the Council just passed an emergency version of my Porchfest Permitting Act!

Porchfest is one of the best events of the year — not only for neighbors, but for local businesses, musicians, and main streets.

Today, we made it easier to neighbors to take part in these amazing events.

This is what governing for all of DC looks like. When we invest in our children and families, we're investing in our entire city's future.

Thank you to CMs Parker and Frumin for championing this amendment and to all my colleagues who voted to put money in the pockets of vulnerable DC families.

Leadership in this moment requires being on the ground and listening to the residents who are demanding we do more to protect communities.

Thank you to those who came out to testify and lift up the stories of those who could not be there for fear of being targeted.

Grateful to OAG for taking legal action to halt the Trump administration's suspension of SNAP assistance.

Thousands of DC residents depend on SNAP to sustain their families and keep food on the table.

Cutting off this critical support while other programs remain funded is cruel and unjust.
NEW: We just filed a lawsuit alongside 25 states to restore SNAP food assistance during the federal shutdown.

141,000 DC residents rely on SNAP to afford their meals — including 47,000 children and 24,000 seniors.

We will do everything in our power to prevent DC families from going hungry.

Newsom: In 2023, Californians contributed $83.1 billion more to the federal government than we received back.

And for your viewers: that other state—Texas—took $71.1 billion more than it contributed to the federal government. California: $83 billion, contributor. Texas: taker.

París es un ejemplo de ciudad que apuesta por la movilidad sostenible: tienen carriles bici anchos, con sus semáforos. Puedes moverte en bici por París para ir a trabajar, a hacer la compra, etc.
Hace poco estuve allí y me sorprendió gratamente
Remember, Paris wasn’t “always this way.”

Not that many years ago, Paris was choking in car traffic. And it wasn’t a safe place to ride a bike for transportation, so not many people tried.

This is new. This is a result of deliberate vision, and bold leadership.

Cities are a result of choices.

In 2021, I gave society more than $5,000.
“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”

“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath

Some costs aren’t costs.
One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss
Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.
