Always amazes me when we compare historical extremes to the present, gives such a clear example of our changing climate!
At 52N, 0W - on the Essex/Herts border, turns out we're going great guns in terms of cumulative daily maximum temperature above 25c - and are well ahead of the benchmark year, 1976 (and all years back to 1970).

Although the next fortnight looks relative chilly so won't add much to this tally...

I talked to a NOAA colleague yesterday who told me that 75% of the federal employees of his division have left and he’s worried about their ability to get work done even if Congress funds NOAA at some level. The devastation to science will be felt for generations.

Per, @metoffice.gov.uk:

34.7°C in London today. That’s not just rare -- it is excessive heat amplified by climate change.

Climate Shift Index shows this level of heat is now at least THREE TIMES MORE LIKELY due to man-made heat-trapping pollution.

This is summer for the UK in a warming world.

As we seem to, yet again, be talking about the hot UK summer of 1976, a reminder that the UK is not the world.

Yes, it was hot that summer over our small region, but the bigger picture tells a different story.

And, we've had hotter UK summers since.

With global warming, there is no new normal, only ever-accelerating change until we stop increasing CO2.
New Study Reinforces Worries About Pulses of Rapid Sea Level Rise - Inside Climate News
An analysis of peat layers at the bottom of the North Sea shows how fast sea level rose during the end of the last ice age, when Earth was warming at a similar rate as today.

Enjoy the UK summer while it lasts....!
Temperatures are expected to climb once again for the remainder of the week, with the possibility of another very warm day for some on Sunday 🌡️

Fun climate fact of the day. Last time there was this much CO2 in the atmosphere there were no humans on Earth.

Was lucky enough to hear Ed talk about this project recently, the impact of people coming together has had a significant impact on our understanding of the UK's past (and future) climate!
Five years ago today I set the Rainfall Rescue citizen science project live. Would anyone actually want to help transcribe millions of hand-written rainfall records from images of 66,000 sheets of paper? #RainfallRescue

The next day was a bit surprising...

Pre-1960s handwritten rain gauge data can inform drought and flood planning, but only if digitised.

I'm back from the 10th European Windstorms workshop in Bern, a few (non-academic) things I learnt:
1. Pear is really nice to dip in fondue.
2. Travelling by train in Europe is amazing, especially using Interrail!
3. If I can throw the microphone I am much more likely to ask a question...

Was great to attend the @rmets.org Insurance Special interest group's event "Advancing Collaboration between the Insurance Sector and Academia" yesterday.

Lots of great conversation which will hopefully lead to collaboration in the future!

Even on the scale of the UK we have different climate zones, from relatively cold & wet, to warm & dry.
