I remember when a writing teacher asked us to raise our hand if we've made more than $5 from our writing. Three of us did.

We were told that's enough to put us in the top 1% of most successful writers through history. A little hyperbole, but not far off. I still think about it.

2/2

- Dozens of House GOP members voted to override two Trump vetoes (although the final votes still fell short of 2/3).

This is not a congressional GOP that is lockstep behind Trump.

The Trump administration denied disaster relief aid for Maryland floods. This article mentioned that there was no clear reason why given. The reason is obvious; Maryland is a blue state with their awesome governor Wes Moore opposing Trump.

“Why is North Korea so closed off?”
This story is WILD. Trump sent Seal Team 6 into North Korea to plant a listening device. The entire thing went sideways within minutes of landing when they noticed a fishing boat near the beach. They killed everyone on board, sunk the bodies to cover their tracks, and fled. Congress was never told.

Yesterday we visited Green Mountain Falls, CO to visit the kinetic sculpture Off the Beaten Path by Patrick Shearn. I wasn’t ready for just how dynamic it was even in the slightest breeze. Reminds me of a murmuration of starlings. Incredible artwork. It’ll only be up through October 19th.

Virtually every speaker the OR GOP has brought to the state for one of their events since 2022 has been, first and foremost, an election denier. Lying about elections is now basically a requirement for being a Republican in good standing.
Heather Honey, a high-profile denier of Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 election, has been appointed to a senior position in the Department of Homeland Security in which she’ll help oversee election security.

the biggest thing i hope studios take away from the success of Sinners and K-Pop Demon Hunters is that, wow, audiences actually DO like and want original stories and don't need every goddamn movie to be a sequel or reboot

Doesn’t matter how many great horror movies get made, doesn’t matter how many times they’ve saved the theatrical movie business since Covid…the genre still can’t get any respect. The “it’s not a horror movie” crowd is always there. This includes filmmakers who can’t admit they made a horror movie.
The reason Sinners is so good is that it’s not a horror movie. It is a film about the Black experience, and the immigrant experience in America. It tells the story of marginalized peoples and uses vampires as allegory to tell that story. It is SO much more than a “vampire movie.”

Exactly. A central component of present-day American Christianity is a backlash to the kindness, tolerance, and pluralism taught by Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. Nothing worse than helping a stranger in need or having Black neighbors who you treat as people.
I’ve seen some folks refer to James Dobson as some coincidental “evil twin” to Fred Rogers, and I would like to clear the record: Dobson was an intentional fundamentalist _reaction_ to Mr. Rogers and his liberal Christian influence on children. It wasn’t an eerie coincidence it was violent rejection
