If I sound somewhat twee by saying things like "I'm grateful" to be in an anthology it's because I have been doing this long enough to know how easy it is to slip out of the arena and be forgotten. Honestly glad the words keep getting out there

I am totally honored to have a story in here, one that I co-authored with Karen Lord. It is nice to see it is still pertinent, but sort of sad the themes it was dealing with are persistent and always going to be things we deal with.

The other interesting part of using an alternate keyboard layout is that it feels stunningly like learning a new language? You have mastery of something that isn't what your brain was wired to expect never to deviate from. It feels like added neuroplasticity? It's fascinating.
Oh, and why ditch QWERTY, why go through the hassle?

Modern alt layouts mean your fingers travel around 50-55% less to type the same words.

Reduces wear and tear.

They also feel really nice. The rolls when you write words or long parts of words with your fingers staying on the home row are fun!
When I was talking about alternate keyboard layouts I was asked if I would recommend switching to Colemak as an alternate to QWERTY still.

I'd actually start by reading about the creation of Anymak: kbd.news/Anymak-the-c... which gives a good overview of alt layouts

Why does the media keep repeating the lie that the illegal killings in the Caribbean are in international waters?

They must know there's no such thing in the region. See link & map. Blue areas are international waters.

People are dying in their own waters.

Now I type at about 80 wpm, to this feels glacial, and I have fiddled with some keys, so my brain is quite frustrated with me this week bc I am just doing way too much all at the same time, but adhd brain is just delighted by the novelty of it all
It has been a trip typing in a new way, but I am up to about 40 words per minute. But even just in the last two weeks it has been helping my RSI tremendously.

In order to fight some wrist damage and RSI I invested some recent writing money towards a keyboard design I have admired since the late 90's. I have always wanted to get my hands on a Datahand keyboard, but they went out of business.

I am slowly typing this on a Svalboard:

The buildup in my region according to Reuters.

Fun fact: there are almost no 'international waters' in the Caribbean basin because of the reality of sovereign boundaries & economic zones, which these ships are almost certainly violating.

My country being buried like the ships are bigger than us 🙄.

Actual expertise continues to be devalued across the board. Intellectual curiosity that helps develop that expertise is steadily being devalued in favor of "productivity" hacks.

Resistance is never futile. More importantly, it can be contagious.

Back in 2018 I switched from the QWERTY keyboard layout to a more efficient keyboard layout, Colemak-DH. I'm giving a lecture on ergo keyboards and alt layouts next week. Brushing up on the 2025 landscape, there've been some big developments in 7 years:

Worried today for everyone in Jamaica.

We typically build here with concrete & steel. But Melissa is forecast to be like an F5 tornado hanging out over your country for a couple DAYS, with flooding, storm surge, landslides etc

This is a different beast entirely.

I'm so glad this idea is spreading. It's humane. It's the right thing to do. A kid doesn't get to choose the economic situation of their parents, and shouldn't suffer poor health, diet, or education because of it.
Canada has made its national school food programme a permanent part of the federal budget. The initiative will provide healthy meals to up to 400,000 additional children while supporting local producers.

There's this odd tension between present tense and the wandering tenses in the dialogue in a present tense story.

For a pulpy sf author, I love that interplay of experimentation and craft, but right now at 10:30pm as I try to get some words in after a 12-hour day, wow, second-guessing the choice!

Once again Rolling Stone knocks it out of the park with Covid coverage.

Long Covid is real and it is a serious threat to our long term health.

It’s already surpassed asthma as the most common chronic illness in kids.

Yet tons of doctors and schools won’t even recognize it:
Long Covid Is Real -- And It's Changing an Entire Generation
Long Covid is affecting hundreds of thousands of kids in America, and many doctors and schools refuse to recognize their illness.

Long Covid has stolen my life as it was. You do NOT want.
And everything I outlined above? Is about a 60% improvement on where I was a year-ish ago and depends on me being able to afford 10,000 euro a year in meds out of pocket.
Think on that.
