Bluesky academics, let’s get to know each other! Quote this & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren’t working on but keep thinking about.

1) Funeral practices and burial sites of lynching victims. 2) 1972 as the "end" of the CRM/BP era.

Curious why we don't see much Broken Windows Theory applied to police

You let cops get away with little crimes like parking illegally and passing out “get out of traffic ticket” cards to friends & family. Next thing you know they’re killing unarmed civilians and abusing their spouses at high rates

I was so distracted by ALL the other stuff that I completely missed this. This is clearly by design. Sewing confusion and chaos so we miss the big things.
But in 1965, LBJ issued exec order 11246 banning discrimination in federal hiring and with federal contractors. That order helped re-build the Black middle class and today DC is home to the nation's most economically thriving Black community. Today, Trump rescinded that landmark order as well.

New: Trump officials have paused all external communications at health agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH.

No health alerts and the famed MMWRs; no updates to key websites or social media posts.

And no indication how long the pause will last.

Trump officials pause health agencies’ communications, citing review
The agencies are charged with making decisions that touch the lives of every American and are the source of crucial information to health-care providers.

This is fucking nonsense and about what I've come to expect from the Democrats as a party nowadays

"Hey why don't we counter Trump's blatant bigotry and discrimination with our own discrimination in a slightly more marketable package!"

Fuck off, just admit you don't give a shit about us
Democrats could "couple basic civil rights with reasonable restrictions on transgender women in women’s sports," Moulton said. "So why don't we propose this and counter Trump's hate with legal protections?" www.wgbh.org/news/politic... #mapoli @gbhnews.bsky.social
Moulton says Trump's early anti-trans actions show Democratic reset is needed
The congressman said after Democrats lost the presidency that intransigence on transgender issues was one factor.

We Only Have Ourselves: The How-Tos and DOs and DON’Ts of Mutual Aid
For all of humanity’s many, many flaws, one of our most redeeming characteristics as a species is an almost-universal desire to connect with one another. When terrible things happen and communities…

I think Americans who weren’t on TikTok don’t understand how thoroughly Democrats shit the bed on this one over the past year.

Don’t worry though, that’s just 170 million people, including 60% of adults under 30.
Rep. Jeff Jackson, who built a national following on the app, voting to ban the app and then trying to tell people that it wouldn't REALLY get banned, it was just going to get sold, really sold me how fucked the Democratic party is when it comes to strategy.

Own goal after own goal.

I was supposed to discuss our book *The End of College Football* tonight in Washington, DC.

I won't be there because I was denied entry to the United States.

They refused to say why; my best guess is some combo of the inauguration, politics, Palestine, and maybe, a new normal.

this confirms something i have long suspected, which is that certain people are told that their professional and academic failures are because of “affirmative action” or “DEI” as a way to avoid difficult conversations about their mediocrity www.wsj.com/lifestyle/ca...
You Blamed DEI for Hurting Your Career. Now What?
For people who pin their failures on diversity, corporate America’s DEI retreat removes a barrier—or maybe an excuse.

"AI" makes up books that don't exist. People try to find non-existent books in real libraries. And blame the libraries when they can't.
Had one person recently where, when I explained that the book recommended wasn’t real. Was in fact just a patchwork of words and authors stolen from other sources, told me he had never been “so disappointed in a library”. It’s so disheartening.

Bitch, you can't protect our data from American-owned sites that sell it to anyone and everyone. When that happens, you call it "capitalism" and ignore it. And are we gonna talk about social media data collection by our own government? Stop projecting. Start addressing real issues.
I’m concerned that Americans are flocking to a number of adversary-owned social media platforms. We still need a comprehensive and risk-based approach to assessing and mitigating the risks of foreign-owned apps.

I’m sorry, this might be a great investigation, but “as it was never intended” is obscene. This is precisely how many people specifically and repeatedly told us — warned us — it would be used.
