The article states eventually we'll run out of young migrants, while it's true that birth rates are declining just about everywhere, climate change is going to create even more displaced people, so if we welcome people seeking asylum, a genuine population crisis is probably a century away or longer

Also - don't trust any of my numbers. I just got up to 20. 20 books by new Māori writers since 2020. And I haven't looked at children's literature properly. I'm just trying to get a view for an article I'm writing, and I knew things had changed, but that's mind-blowing.

Another quick count: 8 of the writers since 2020 came through the IIML, 7 came through MLT and the rest were independent. The indies are amazing. Such a hard thing to do.

Witi used to talk about how there were only 5 Māori novelists. I remember having this conversation in Taiwan in 2016. I don't know what changed, but I know we were all working hard to change it.
