My latest for @playthegame-org.bsky.social, where I attempt a true cost carbon accounting of the Canada-Mexico-USA World Cup, and conclude that it will be the deadliest sporting event in history, producing emissions that will kill more than 70,000 people. I call this madness "Infantinocide."

"Infantinocide" or degrowth football.
The 2026 World Cup could emit nearly 70 million tons of CO2 and lead to the premature deaths of approximately 70,000 people. Yet, FIFA plans to expand future tournaments with even more teams.

“Athleticide”
Israel has now murdered 785 Palestinian athletes since October 2023, including 437 footballers.

It has also destroyed 288 sports facilities.

This is athleticide, a modality of the genocide designed to obliterate culture and identity.

As we head into this FIFA Club World Cup weekend in the USA, meteorologists are warning of dangerous heat and humidity up and down the east coast. Temperatures will rise through Sunday and could last all week, with a heat index of 43ºC by Monday.

You reap what you sow…
A dangerous heat wave is coming for the Club World Cup 👇

Host cities facing “extreme” risk as high temperatures and humidity combine to push heat index past 38C/101F 📈

Which matches and venues are most likely to be hit?

What is FIFA doing to mitigate risks?

More excellent, depressing reporting from @josimarfootball.bsky.social. Really important to support this kind of journalism, so subscribe to Josimar if you are able - they’re on the ropes and need the support right now, and it would be a tragedy if we lost this resource. There is no one like them.

Bayern Munich fans at the Club World Cup held up a banner saying "world football is more poorly governed than before" and "smash FIFA".

They are not going out on a limb here.

Correct! Exciting to see players stepping up.
FIFA must drop their sponsorship with Saudi Aramco, the biggest oil company in the world. They should not be promoting the burning of more fossil fuels during a climate crisis.

I am proud to lead a group of current and former pro players calling for this change.

Unacceptable FIFA deal is final straw - they must stop advertising fossil fuels
A group of footballers, led by David Wheeler, have come together to demand meaningful action from FIFA on the climate crisis ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States

Excellent thread. This is resulting in many 1000s of fewer course offerings at the moment when we need them the most. Instead of investing more in education during a crisis for which it’s a ready solution, the BCNDP are allowing the kind of cuts the Liberals only dreamt of. Disgusted as an NDPer.
Speaking as a college prof, the provincial NDP is hanging us out to dry.
