This is why a hybrid regime scenario is the likeliest if the democratic backsliding continues. You aren't going to see totalitarian, one-party states, but you're gonna see managed elections with the dominant party winning without fail to keep up the veneer of democracy.
The main explanation I have for this is that most Western elites live in milieus where liberal democracy and the rule of law are a given but they feel besieged by demands of the “woke”, minorities, etc. The rise of the far right is seen as a contrary faction that will put “those people“ in line.
