The "hard-men" of Gondor were getting their shit kicked in until they were rescued by foreigners and a girl.

The Shire was doing fine until they let a fascist demagogue ("Sharkey" aka Saruman) take over, close the gates, impose a bunch of thug-enforced rules, and despoil nature for profit.

I feel increasingly disconnected from the party I voted for and had such high hopes for.

Did we give them a mandate to cos-play Reform-lite?

I want them to lead and argue for their vision instead of chasing polls.

Oh and charge me more income tax instead of penalising kids & disabled people

Agree - this is one reason why the total neglect of the quarter or so of voters backing Lib Dems and Greens is distorting understanding of the current political situation in Britain. Many of those voters will be "unhappy with Labour, hate Tories more, hate Farage most"
Fascinating subplot here - the collapse of the NDP polling. Gonna go out on a limb and guess that in CA, as in the UK, there are a lot of voters who switch between "I hate the main left-wing party and will vote for an alternative" and "My overriding priority is to stop the right"
Here is the real polling chart. I am not too familiar with Canadian politics, but what exactly happened in Canada on January 6th 2025, that it so dramatically changed the course for Libs? ;-)

Great thread on the scourge of NIMBYISM
Three NIMBY campaigns I’ve experienced directly:
1. Developers wanted to build some houses on scrub land next to a major junction between two A-roads near where I grew up (near Ewell village in Surrey

Leaflets and flyers bewailing the catastrophic loss of much loved local green space
Whenever I’ve raised NIMBY campaigns I get replies like this. Everyone I’ve spoken to who has direct contact with the planning process says such selfish bad faith campaigns happen all the time. I’ve had direct experience with three myself. The planning system enables this stuff. That’s a problem.

Great to see Louie Barry flourishing. Great article Daniel
I went to Stockport County to watch and interview Louie Barry, who became the first ever English player signed to Barcelona’s La Masia.

I don't think I've ever met a young player more determined to control his own destiny.

Nice state-failure microcosm in The Economist offices getting evacuated for a block-wide power outage, and stepping outside to find that — as usual in this part of central London — my phone data also doesn’t work.
