Flavius Scorpus was a famous chariot racer for the Greens from the C1st AD. He was the Roman equivalent of Lionel Messi, a superstar of the sporting world. He won a staggering 2,048 races & became v wealthy. He died at 27, probably in a crash. The poet Martial wrote about him (see 2nd Blueskeet) 🧵

Carts are a frequent topic on Late Geometric Greek vessels, as part of funeral ceremonies and as vehicles of warriors. Models of carts are rarer and this one with is exceptionally well preserved. 750-740 BCE, from Athens. KHM Vienna. #archaeology
