We should acknowledge that MAGA and Trump’s victory were enabled by internet platforms whose business models reward fear and outrage. Dems had 8 yrs after FB enabled Trump and never had a floor vote in either chamber on a single bill that could possibly have addressed the harms. 🧵1/x

Current estimates say that every prompt you give a generative "AI" system— not each session, every PROMPT— is like pouring a 16 oz bottle of water onto the ground.

This is a fact that goes somewhere in every talk i give, now, & i always see audience members looking it up… and then looking horrified
Annoyed by articles that go into great detail about what companies say they're doing with so-called "A.I." but do not ask what companies are doing about the technology's ecological impact.

Kindred Spirits, the Monument to the Choctaw People in Co. Cork.

Dedicated to the people who, 13 years after the Trail Of Tears, saw the Irish people dying under the British Famine.

The people who gathered their meager funds and sent $170 to the Irish people.

The people who just wanted to help.

the private equity acquisition process where they take out huge loans to buy a company, put those loans on the company’s balance sheet and liquidate the company to pay them off (while looting the assets) should be made illegal

it is a purely destructive process and it’s absurd that we allow it
Just got a news alert saying Joann Fabrics is going into bankruptcy due to decreasing demand.

Article fails to say that it was purchased by a private equity firm a while ago and recently went public and is carrying $2.4 billion in debt.

Private equity strikes again.

Our culture has real trouble grasping that we can't bring back what it felt like to see The Prisoner/Ghostbusters/Star Wars the first time by doing them again, because the thing that made them compelling is that they were different. We can only feel that feeling again by making more new things.

I will say one thing for the explosion of "AI" crap, it's made me more appreciative of the people who are making real things. Not just the professionals who are practicing traditional art forms, I appreciate everyone who is taking the time to learn a skill and practice it at any level.

TIL learned a fun fact

the vast, vast majority of microplastics aren't actually from breaking down single-use plastics like I thought, but from car tires. Car tires, simply by being worn down while driving, emit more microplastics than anything by far

Tire wear represents a large source of microplastic entering the aquatic environment, however little is known about its environmental risks. Here, we provide the first assessment of the environmental ...

This revelation throws into question every Hugo Award ever given. If the US & Canadian admins quietly disqualified people for political reasons this time, have they done it before? Will they do it again?

People keep asking me if this is worse than the Puppies. YEAH. THIS IS WORSE THAN THE PUPPIES.
For the last few weeks I've been working with Chris Barkley @cmzhang42.bsky.social of @file770.bsky.social on a report about censorship in the 2023 Hugo Awards.

Leaked emails and files indicate authors and works deemed “not eligible” for the awards were removed due to political considerations. 1/3

"It's impossible to very quickly stop using this product I sell" is not really controversial from a fossil company CEO, but from a COP president, it's utterly unprecedented and COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.

Because it's not true: eliminating fossil fuels from society very fast is very possible.
