You can make art.

The biggest step isn't getting good at art, it's being willing to make art that doesn't match the idea of "good art" in your head.

Making a lot of imperfect art is an essential step toward making perfect art; a counterproductive goal you shouldn't have anyway.

Just make art.

The actual secret to why I know stuff is that I ask a question any time I don’t understand literally anything. I don’t care how simple it is. Anybody who makes fun of you for asking a simple question likely doesn’t know the answer either

Once I was at Darwin’s across the street from Harvard, waiting for my sandwich. An older man came in, walked to the front. “I’m picking up my sandwich,” he said. “Name?” asked the barista. “Larry Summers,” he said. I rolled my eyes, probably audibly. No last names at the sandwich place, LARRY!

This afternoon, OUSD sent an email alert to parents confirming ICE activity in West Oakland.

We are re-sharing COYOTE's 'What We Can Do About ICE' guide to help our communities stay ready and empowered in alarming moments like this. Please share with your neighbors and friends.
What We Can Do About ICE
ICE is in the Bay Area. And yes, we can all do something about it.

I have an affinity for SNL—from a Making Art perspective, it’s impressive to *create something new* each week, even when it’s not funny. It’s at its best w/ a host who’s the right combo of acting chops, humility, and on board with weird silliness—this Saturday’s was 100% that! Nicely done.

I’m not even trying to read these emails and I feel like each one I come across is more inane than the last. Like what a bunch of boring, self-important buttheads.

Today I was unloading the dishwasher and gently tapped a bowl against another bowl and it reverberated the initial beats of Tone Loc’s “Wild Thing” 🥹

Road work outside my dentist’s office is making truly horrifying drilling sounds, feel it in my teeth, very Halloween, thank you that’s disturbing.

Happy Halloween! I’m celebrating with a dentist appointment where I’ll reveal the nightguard I’ve had for 6 months and already gnawed through in my fitful slumber 😱

Shout out to the person in my neighborhood who had removed the “MA” on the back of their Tacoma, that made me smile.

Nobody asked, but I do look at photos of events I thought about going to and see how many people are wearing masks, and… I guess I’m glad I stayed home?

I found this a really illuminating thread on what demonstrations do and why they matter.
In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

I’m so curious how many people were out marching in Oakland today! I was feeling kind of low energy and periody but it was good to be out there.

Take note of all these people turning out for protests in small towns in red states.

Remember them the next time you’re inclined to write an area off because “they voted for this.”
