When is the Danish PM visiting Trump, and is the White House set still in print? The one including the East Wing?
Anyway, we need some joy, so here's the Egyptian foreign minister being given a Lego Pyramid by the Danish foreign minister.

"By taxing estates heavily at death the state marks its condemnation of the selfish millionaire's unworthy life. Of all forms of taxation, this seems the wisest." -- Andrew Carnegie
"If you're a billionaire, why are you a billionaire?" Billie Eilish speaking directly to Mark Zuckerberg, as she donates $11.5m to food poverty and climate justice organisations.
'Give your money away,' Billie Eilish tells billionaires
The singer called on the mega wealthy to donate more to charity, during a speech at the WSJ Awards attended by the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and George Lucas.

This is what civil servants do while on furlough.
Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci flew into the eye of Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that is projected to hit Jamaica.

“It was equal parts scientifically stunning and horrifying from a humanitarian standpoint,” he wrote, flying in one of two groups of hurricane hunters. https://wapo.st/42XpWmq

Am I the only one amazed by the exact number 88 dog whistles that supposedly fit in the east wing?
The White House’s current configuration means there is only a “cocktail area” that holds 88 people “if it’s tight,” Trump said, as he described the new event space as a “world-class ballroom.”

That includes my own results. My biggest moments of imposter syndrome are when my computer simulations are supposed to reproduce observations.
Pretty often, they turn out spot on. MAGIC.
Science often feels like the closest thing we have to magic.

Same here. And most of them, in hindsight, I'm happy not to have gotten.
My list of jobs I didn’t get would easily be 75-100 long!

As an example, it would have been lovely to have a bike rack to park my bike at my @clevelandclinic.bsky.social cardiology appointment this morning.
Describing my time in Europe to US friends pretty much made everyone jealous about the futuristic way of living there. Bikes, parks, public transportation, walkable neighborhoods....
Will the absence of robotaxis in Europe mark the moment its citizens notice how far their continent has fallen behind?

Lady, I'm Dutch. I've lived under water for most of my life. A tad bit of rain is not going to be noticeable.
Canadian B&B owner offered me an umbrella this morning, which was sweet. I politely declined.

Madame, I am British. I have a number of small umbrellas concealed upon my person at all times.

I invite everyone here to grab a drink with their friendly neighborhood Physics professor and ask them about "Einstein is wrong" correspondence.
In defense of "contrarianism, RD writes, "if everyone around you is a professional scholar and everyone tends to agree about certain crucial questions, shouldn’t you be deferential to this shared expertise?" I wonder whether he would extend this critique to fields like physics or mathematics? /13

"@marisakabas.bsky.social , an actual independent journalist whose scoops the Times has not credited."
I lost the number of burns in this piece, but this one was particularly well deserved.
The New York Times' obsession with a view from nowhere is long-standing, but as Republicans increasingly circulate insane conspiracy theories and racist nonsense, the cult of centrism has taken a self-destructive turn.

Marvelously written story. Not exactly sure what it tells us something about the international weather community, but I feel a bit more hopeful now anyway.
The secret German weather station on the Arctic island of Svalbard. Part of the 'Weather War'.

The team, led by Lieutenant Wilhelm Dege, were the last German troops to surrender in WW2, finally doing so FOUR MONTHS after Germany had officially surrendered.

It was not for want of trying. /1

I wonder how much the OH Trump approval rating is going to be a predictor for Vivek 2026.
Trump just hit a new all-time low of -11 (among adults) in our approval average. He's underwater on pretty much every issue, and in all the swing states. Underwater in Ohio, and nearly negative in Texas and Florida.

Thank you, mayor Bibb, for making Cleveland an ever greater place to be. Happy Juneteenth!
Freedom isn't something Black Americans take for granted. This Juneteenth, it’s clear the greedy & powerful few still want to take away our freedoms for their own gain. Part of the way we fight back is by celebrating each other & building stronger communities.

I'll start with Smile though. The 2004 version was one of the more memorable concerts I've seen.
Brian's passing really saddens me. He was a musical genius. And like many geniuses, he lived a troubled life. I too will be playing a lot of Pet Sounds in the coming days.
Well I guess I'll throw Pet Sounds on the turntable after my next meeting

Flabbergasted that the least weird part of this sentence is the fact that schools systems have their own police force.
Los Angeles school police will set up a safety perimeter around campuses and school events — including graduations — to keep federal immigration agents away from students, employees and families, school officials said.

I could (somewhat) handle a lack of ASR funding for my own projects, but destroying the long term ARM measurement sites would be absolutely catastrophic.
DOE ASR program manager just sent a colleague an excerpt from the WH DOE budget that was stealthily dropped: “BER activities in environmental system sciences, atmospheric system research, earth system modeling, data management, and the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement User Facility are terminated."
