FACT OF THE DAY. 25 October 2004. John Peel died suddenly from a heart attack (aged 65) while on holiday in Peru. He was a champion of new rock talent especially acts outside the traditional commercial mainstream. He was the longest serving original BBC Radio 1 DJ, broadcasting from 1967 to 2004.

For a pilot study in 2022, scientists fitted 5 Australian magpies with tiny trackers that could only be removed with a magnet or scissors. Within 10 minutes, a female had successfully removed the tracker from a younger bird, and 3 days later, all of them had been removed.

I'm a landlord of a pub. Have spun a story that a major literary figure used to drink at my inn back in the 1700s. Completely untrue, but tourists love to visit the pub and sit in his 'seat'. All bollocks, but it's great for business.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 14 September 1715. French monk Dom Pérignon died (aged 76). The famous champagne brand is named after him. He claimed he had invented Champagne, but this claim has not been accepted. He did, however, play an important role in developing the method of producing sparkling wine.
