Here is the SS United States. Built in 1951 to be the world's fastest transatlantic ocean liner, it is pictured here on February 19, 2025 (the day before Trump's inauguration) leaving Philadelphia under tow, on its way to Florida where it will be deliberately sunk to form an artificial reef.

A second German tourist is being held in a detention centre after having her Visa revoked by the U.S.

It’s the same detention centre holding Jessica Brösche, the German tattoo artist who spent 8 days in solitary. She’s been held for 6 weeks.

The U.S. is not a safe place to travel anymore

Hey 🇺🇸, the world needs you to put sand in the gears of your government. Any sand you can grab, any gears you can reach. Even something as seemingly minor as this counts.

Earlier this week my family buried my grandmother. She was born in the Ukrainian SSR right into the teeth of the Holodomor, and remembered always being hungry as a child. Today, her village in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast is near the front line in the Russo-Ukrainian War.

The Concert of Europe (1815-1914) mostly kept Europe's borders stable for 99 years, and facilitated unprecedented economic development (and brutal colonialism!) as the scale of armed conflicts during this time was limited.

This gives me anxiety. 🇺🇸 considering moving to 🇨🇦 for safety, you may need to look overseas. Remember that Otto Frank moved his family from Germany to the Netherlands in 1933 for safety, and that didn't work out well for them at all.

Donad Trump's threats and claims about Canada may be unprecedented in the history of U.S.-Canada relations. But they have a strong precedent elsewhere in recent history: They closely resemble remarks ...

History buffs will know that every authoritarian leader eventually converges on some version of: "I *am* the state. I can not break the law, I am the law, the law is instantiated in me."

Our march to authoritarianism so far has been excruciatingly by-the-book. Hitting every beat. No surprises.

Canadians are resolute on buying more Canadian products and less American, but get this: 9/10 of people who vote Liberal, NDP and EVEN BQ will buy more Canadian… while 75% of Cons will. Even separatists are more patriotic than Cons!

"Don't say that, people might despair!"

Look, if telling the truth about liberal democracy -- it's gone, we gotta start over -- encourages people to give up on liberal democracy, then they don't deserve liberal democracy.

Christian Nationalism is like trying to baptize a bald eagle.

It’s not what Jesus asked us to do, it’s probably illegal, and it hurts everyone involved.

1/ At the beginning of 2025, only two presidential republics had maintained uninterrupted democratic governance since 1945: the USA, and Costa Rica. Right now, I think it's reasonable to say that only Costa Rica belongs on that list, as the separation of powers in the USA appears to have collapsed.

Brave Sir Donald ran away.
("No!")
Bravely ran away away.
("I didn't!")
When others' tariffs he did see,
His own tariffs did suddenly flee.
("I never!")
Yes, brave Sir Donald turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
("You're lying!")

The idea that the private sector can do everything the public sector does, but better and cheaper, is the Right's Lysenkoism.
Privatize everything so they can make money off everything and gouge the people for everything. The dismantling of our government and society and leaving behind the most vulnerable.

You know how abusers isolate their victims from supportive friends and family?

Anyhow, the Trump administration is damaging ties with most of America's traditional trade partners with tariffs right now. Canada, Mexico, Europe, Japan, Taiwan…

The first North American abolitionist document, the 1688 Germantown Quaker petition against slavery, opposed the existence of slavery partially on the grounds that it led to family separation among enslaved people, thereby violating the Golden Rule.

What are the odds that ICE was trying to deport Venezuelans to Colombia, and that's why Colombia wouldn't accept the American deportation flight? (And then, in a fit of pique, Trump started a tariff war with Colombia…)
