O’Flaherty’s intervention on trans rights and protest rights centers on the necessity test, not proportionality.

In the simplest terms, it’s the question of “is it going to help?” If a law achieves nothing good and only interferes with our freedom, it violates human rights.

1. As some Democrats have run from transgender rights, Zohran Mamdani is showing what so many others have lacked: courage to lead with his values over pandering to focus groups.

The ad is one of the best things I've seen from a politician on transgender people.

It methodically goes through each problem in the review.

One of the most perverse ideas on the anti-trans side is that trans people are instantly affirmed and celebrated by everyone when they come out and that acceptance is driving a social contagion.

It's the ultimate form of gaslighting against our community.

It feels very strange to me, as someone on the Left, to have found myself deeply distrustful of the State. But I guess that's my class and colour privilege talking. And, as I've often said, advocacy for trans people has been a skeleton key to a whole new moral universe.

Early discussions about the Gender Recognition Act even touched on the British Nationality Act and the rules around acquiring nationality through one’s mother. I find it amusing how deeply the civil servants examined the issue. And how patronising Patrick Hodge has been to find the Act defective.

Wes Streeting’s first act in office was to resist the judicial review of the puberty blockers bans and to commission and publish a so-called independent review on suicide stats by the bigoted “Professor” Louis Appleby, in order to influence the court.

I now know with certainty that it was a lie.
Wes Streeting watched trans kids cry in front of him and then sided with the groups that teach parents how to torture those kids.

Politicians are using fear about trans+ people to distract from the systemic issues that actually harm women — underfunded services, economic and health inequalities, and male violence (predominantly perpetrated by men that women already know).

Let me elaborate my disagreement with @zackpolanski.bsky.social in a 🧵. The scenes on our streets are not "the consequences of decades of austerity" but of centuries of racism propagated by the British ruling classes to rationalise the social order they have constructed at home and abroad.
I'm genuinely grateful for the solidarity, irrespective of how rare this is from a politician. But fascism can't be reduced to displaced economic concerns. It doesn't stand up analytically, it won't help politically or strategically, and I really wish the left (of which I'm part) wouldn't do this.
The scenes on our streets are shameful consequences of decades of austerity - government after government fanning the flames of anti migration instead of tackling inequality.

We can & must make different choices. Solidarity to all communities under attack. We stand together.
