I've never been fun or interesting, but I'm mostly just a project manager these days.

I've never done a proper #introduction post here. I'm Tommy Brownell. For years I reviewed RPGs. I've done a little freelance writing/editing, primarily for Savage Worlds. Used to be a pro wrestler and pro wrestling booker. Still write indie comic books. Citizen & employee of the Cherokee Nation.

Great read. I’ll be firing up some Gentry today because I only knew her hits and, from this article, it sounds like I would love a lot of her work.

And the rest of the article touches on a lot of things I’ve felt, especially since Covid.

Life (Death?) goals.
Decided that when Death turns up to play a game for my soul, it's the perfect opportunity to finally do the Great Pendragon Campaign.

Seconded. It's my favorite new game in years.
If you like tabletop rpg's and cinematic, superhero, or pulp action, I encourage you to look at Outgunned by Two Little Mice. It's a great medium crunch narrative RPG with some unique mechanics.
There's a funding campaign for the Supers version:

New Substack is up. This week: Process of Elimination

This one is a little more personal as it relates to it being 4 years #sober for me. It's a marker for me for how far I've come when I hit rock bottom (which is different for everyone).

Weekly Words #17: Process of Elimination
It wasn't this “exact” day, but four years ago this month I decided to give up alcohol, the last thing I really had holding me back.

This is THE art I think of when I think of Ravenloft as a setting.
The great Stephen Fabian is one of those artists from the 2E era of AD&D that just doesn’t get enough credit or attention. His interior illustrations in the Ravenloft line and Tome of Magic especially stand out. Pitch perfect aesthetic… and what an amazing talent. Pure 💯.

One of the greatest video game experiences - and very possibly THE greatest video game experience - I’ve ever had.

Since I don't game anymore, I think I'll just convert every D&D book ever to Savage Worlds.

Crushed today.

One of my biggest influences as a writer, and one of my favorites as a reader.
So sorry to hear that Peter David has passed away. I didn't know Peter well, but we traveled the same creative roads together for many years and I admired his talent and passion for storytelling. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

60 Free Film Noir Movies You Can Watch Online, Including Classics by John Huston, Orson Welles & Fritz Lang
During the 1940s and 50s, Hollywood entered a “noir” period, producing riveting films based on hard-boiled fiction. These films were set in dark locations and shot in a black & white aesthetic that fi...

1969: The Silver Surfer ponders the power of compassion.

In a time when too many people seem to be utterly lacking in empathy, Stan Lee's words, in all their melodramatic glory, still resonate. (Art by John & Sal Buscema.)

Start with Kurt Busiek’s run, make sure to get Fabian Nicieza’s continuation, and look for ZEMO: BORN BETTER to wrap it all up.

For my money, that’s as good as any superhero comics I’ve ever read.
For everyone who enjoyed the Thunderbolts movie I would highly recommend checking out the original 1997 Thunderbolts run by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley, which you can find in stores under the title "Thunderbolts Classic".

“Play to find out what happens” (or similar phrasing) shows up often in PbtA and other games, GM advice columns, and discussions about narrative play. But I've seen it widely misunderstood (along with fiction first, but that's another subject).
