An American flag built on the backs of Black people...

Black music protesting white political terror in registers they never hear; reminiscent of ancestral spirituals embedded with instructions for runaways

All this in New Orleans... What a moment

You can’t fight for equality while also fighting against it. That makes you a hypocrite.

There are lots of reasons I love Beyoncé &her music. As a historian, perhaps the most important 1 is how much she respects her sources & honors her ancestors & inspirations. Beyoncé's liner notes & lyrics, are full of citations; I use her as an example in my history classes of Why Citation Matters.
Beyoncé dedicates her Album of the Year win to Linda Martell—one of the first Black women to find success in the country music industry and who makes an appearance on Cowboy Carter.

Beautiful moment. I'm so glad it finally happened. #Grammys

THIS IS FOR LEMONADE!
THIS IS FOR RENAISSANCE!

But in actuality, this is for COWBOY CARTER. An academically-investigated journey through genre and America’s history through music. In many ways, it is the musical-manifestation of “Fuck Around and Find Out”. She’s unstoppable

Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” has won a Grammy for Album of the Year. The album, @skornhaber.bsky.social wrote in April, might be the most American story of all—about survival through reinvention:
This Is What an Album Needs to Do Right Now
Beyoncé’s "Cowboy Carter" is an exploration of country—not just the musical genre, but America itself.
