more than a decade of public scholarship has taught me that the moments when it's most tempting to react strongly and quickly are the ones when it's most useful to step back, seek context, and force yourself to think slowly. i don't always follow it, but those are my guidelines for myself.

With legal challenges to this law pending, we cannot justify building the expensive required infrastructure.

I'll say it a thousand times -- any account of the past that only celebrates the good parts of a nation without reckoning with the bad is not what we call "history"

It is propaganda, pure and simple.
You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.

‘lay’ = to place something down flat
‘lie’ = to be in a flat position on a surface

These two are already confusing, and to top it all off, ‘lay’ is the past tense of ‘lie,’ and ‘laid’ is the past tense of ‘lay.’
