New paper just dropped! Some really badass people (not me) dove super deep (we're talking >100 ft), caught lionfish, and put tags in them (while underwater)! Yours truly got to analyze the data-super stoked on how this one turned out. DM me if you need access.

Characterizing changes in density, space use, and diel behavior of Lionfish (Pterois volitans) on mesophotic coral reefs in the US Virgin Islands - Marine Biology
Lionfish that live in mesophotic reef environments (30 to 150 m depth) are potentially undermining invasive species management efforts on shallower reefs. Understanding the behavior of lionfish in the...

We decided to do #tidytuesday in the UVI R Users Group this week! Exploring emergency room wait times bummed us out, so we opted to do last week's #pokemon dataset instead. Here's what I came up with!

(10/10: way more fun than prepping lectures for next week)

It's not often that data itself speaks so clearly, but here it does. The EO around stricter voting laws is a solution without a problem, and would only suppress eligible voters.

I wrote up an analysis about the data and how rhetoric travels faster than truth.

A Data-Driven Analysis Of Voter Fraud Claims
Explore the truth behind voter fraud claims with real data. This analysis breaks down common myths, compares fraud rates, and reveals why restrictive voting laws often do more harm than good.

Me every single time a graduate student comes into my office for statistics advice and launches into a speech about whatever test ChatGPT told them to use...
Stats consulting is constantly like:

Them: I want you to run (complex stats)

Me: OK, what's your research question though?

Them: ...A (complex stat)?

Me: Research question?

Them: You know, like the stats in this journal article. Something reviewers will like.

The site of a deep-sea mining test in 1979 had lower levels of biodiversity when researchers revisited it in 2023 compared with undisturbed areas nearby

What a time to be a scientist in the USA reliant of federal grant funding... Also super stoked this is the semester I decided to prioritize getting a major grant 👍

Anybody got a thread on alternative funding sources for US marine scientists yet?
