My Uber driver, Jose, is blasting Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like a Woman”

I, a white elder millennial woman, ask him if he picked this song just for me

He does not know enough English to understand my question. I don’t speak enough Spanish to communicate it. We smile warmly at each other instead

Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

It’s not that I NEED my ADHD meds to be functional, it’s that without them it takes me far too long to realize the reason I can’t find my phone is that I’m holding it my hand and using it as a flashlight.

My loves, before arguing about the difference in the pedo and ephebo philias, I want you to imagine yourself holding a hammer.

And then imagine yourself interrupting the act of either of those philias.

If someone ends up dead by hammer in both, I don’t think the difference matters

Finally achieving your goal after 85 submissions and over 50 years of effort, and then having to walk away?

As a fellow author said in our Discord group, this would turn me into The Joker.
On August 12, 1971, 16-year-old me mailed the first story I ever wrote off on its first submission to my dream market, F&SF. My tale was quickly rejected. On July 17th, 2025, I finally sold a story to that magazine. Here's why I felt I had to withdraw that story. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

Idk, just letting you know that these kids grow up if you feed them. They get educations and good jobs and pay taxes that feed other hungry people.

I’m glad my taxes pay for SNAP and other assistance programs. I feel like we all owe each other so much.
This is just a regular reminder that in the early 90s when I was a child, my school lunch cost was reduced. Society fed me.

Someone(s) also left at least one basket of food on our doorstep because my parents were too proud to accept it directly. Again, society fed me.

You know that feeling when you just want your stories to exist out in the world, but everyone you submit to is like, “oh, no thank you” ???

This one time, my nearly blind, arthritic dog who had dementia and would frequently get lost on the wrong side of a tree, looked like he was painted yellow

Little fucker (i love him so) figured out how to climb up on kitchen table and rubbed his butt on some flowers.

This feels a lot like that
Some of the stray dogs living near Chernobyl have recently turned blue. This confused scientists for weeks, until they realized they had simply been rolling around in chemicals from a nearby set of portable toilets. 14/10 for all

A friend, who I don’t get to see much and would like to see more, invited me to join her book club.

They’re reading Terry Pratchett books. I don’t really care for Pratchett.

I know, I’m being blasphemous.

He’s FINE! But I want to like him - I just don’t really get the hype (1/2)

Watson went to Indiana University for his PhD (my alma mater)

The rumor is that he never tied his shoes. You could apparently hear his shoes and laces slapping against the floor…which gave people plenty of time to go the other way. No one liked him.
