People construct narratives around the identities and, because they have more information about themselves than others, they tend to be much more reasoned and rooted in the perception of logic.
In turn, they get spooked by language they think reflects emotionality.

There has to be some name for the fallacy that what voters want is moderation. Lots of progressive policies poll extremely well. Hell, much of the Republican agenda is explicitly based on ideas that are deeply unpopular.
