Plastic news is not usually good news, but a 40%!!! reduction of single-use plastics on EU coastlines is my news to me good news for May 8. #OceanOptimism #EarthOptimism #BeyondTheObituaries joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu/jrc-news-and...
Marine litter on the EU coastline down by almost one-third
But more needs to be done, as it is still above the agreed threshold value.

Yesterday Tr*mp froze all NSF funds, today he announced a 56% budget cut. This is going to devastate science in the US. I've spent the morning calling my reps to raise hell and applying for jobs as it's clear I can't sustain my freelance scicomm business on NSF funding anymore (1/n)

'Dandelions,' was painted by the Danish artist Bertha Wegmann around 1910. It wasn't an arbitrary choice of a plant to paint: the dandelion was used to promote the women’s liberation movement in Scandinavia because of its capacity for uncontrolled, strong-willed growth.

This! Research shows that protests 1) raise awareness, 2) empower people (especially the disadvantaged), and 3) exert pressure on elites.

Anyone saying they don’t work is unfamiliar with the research and the history of movement building.
Less complaining about how big rallies don't do anything, more brainstorming about how to activate their attendees to get involved with targeted campaigns, direct action, and mutual aid.

Sen. Booker’s speech was a substantive and moral account of this moment. He did not read the phone book. He did not babble.
For 24 hours @booker.senate.gov laid out a detailed, damning, and critical narrative of truth, history, politics, morality, humanity.

What will you do?

Science friends!

Many of you, alarmed by grant funding cuts that make expensive field ecology research difficult or impossible, have been thinking about what to do instead. Great idea.

Some of you have been saying "I'll just do some social science surveys," without learning how. Bad idea! 🧵🧪
