One of my favorite marine snails on the Georgia coast, the knobbed whelk (Busycon carica), a bivalve-killing predator that lives in sandy shallow-marine environments, but is occasionally seen buried (by its burrowing) in intertidal zones. 🧪🌊🐌

No coastal justice without environmental justice: a systematic literature review of climate and coasts - Climatic Change
As the ocean warms, sea levels rise, and coastlines change, there has been a growing interest in environmental justice and climate justice on the coast. Here we conduct a systematic literature review ...

New paper from my @cig-uw.bsky.social colleagues on the importance of direct funding to community-led organizations to advance their own resilience priorities.

This case study is based on a small-grants program run by the NW Climate Resilience Collaborative, which was terminated by NOAA in May.

Ocean acidity has increased by ~30% over pre-Industrial levels due to the uptake of anthropogenic CO2. Pteropods, “sea butterflies,” are planktonic snails that are sensitive to these changes. Scientists have found that their shells are getting thinner & are dissolving, especially at high latitudes.

boyfriend said he won't chop one of my fingers off :(
Is it time to cut one of my fingers off, straighten my hair, and start smoking cigarettes yet?

(guess who I'm being for Halloween)

Not much is scarier for a #GreatLakes fish than the invasive sea lamprey, sometimes called vampire fish 🧛

But while they're more trick than treat in their introduced range, they're actually threatened in parts of their native range of the Atlantic coasts of Europe + North America - that's scary!

when I say SCIENCE you say FUN!

SCIENCEEEE!!!!!
Nanotyrannus is real.

For years I’ve considered many mid-sized gracile tyrannosaurs to be juvenile T. rex.

But I was wrong. This stunning new skeleton of a mature long-armed small tyrannosaur is clearly a different species.

Isn’t science fun?!

Researchers discover new tyrannosaur species in ‘duelling dinosaurs’ fossil
Analysis of Montana fossils shows the battling predator was a fully grown Nanotyrannus, not a young T rex

Just realizing I've posted some version of this thread at least a couple times over the years to defend adaptation when it gets thrown out with the adaptation bro bathwater. And likely will again.
It pains me to see adaptation used to undermine mitigation, but also to see it painted as a "false solution."

Adaptation is harm reduction for climate impacts that can no longer be avoided. Climate justice demands it. AND it has limits, becoming less effective and more costly as warming proceeds.
