Former HS Spanish teacher, current SLA PhD candidate at UW Madison. Interested in language identity and ideologies in the classroom. When not chasing my kid, find me reading fantasy or stress baking.
Having a grad student newsletter talk about how summer is a “calendar white space” and good for micro credentials and skill building is really infuriating as a grad student parent. We’re not all 23 free of obligations and financial precariousness.

I emerge from my maternity leave to share that I’m going to ACTFL in New Orleans this coming November! This time I’m presenting some research from my dissertation. Feels good after getting a desk rejection for a paper a few weeks ago that made me feel like I don’t belong in academia.

Today in “weird researcher milestones”: I no longer cringe when I hear myself speaking when doing interview transcripts.

Please stop boosting these "alt" govt accounts. I know their content sounds good, but it is often unconfirmed rumors and things they could have no way to know. I know some of them have websites that make them seem real, but look close—no real info, buisness status, but ...hmm, weird they sell merch.

Being a PhD student in my mid-30s often feels frustrating because there is a lot about the system that feels infantalizing. I have a child with another on the way, a mortgage, and already had a career teaching. I’m not a kid fresh out of undergrad (heck, I’ve met faculty younger than me).

Sooooo my PA appointment is part of a federally funded project. That specifically deals with equitable education. 😬

I’ve been thinking and writing a lot about abolition, liberation, and curricular justice in the field of world language education. I’m honored and excited to share and reflect on this topic during my plenary at the upcoming AAAL conference. I hope you’ll join me!

ACTFL 2025 proposal submitted! Fingers crossed! Not just because I’ve enjoyed going to and presenting at ACTFL before, but I’ve never been to New Orleans and I’m already daydreaming about the food. I miiiiight use conference travel as an excuse to play tourist, just maybe

Oops ACTFL proposals are due this week and I haven’t started 🫣 going to do a research paper this time and present from my dissertation!

Been slow getting back into work mode after winter break but today I had what felt like a real, productive day!

Hate to admit but the combo of more excercise and getting back to therapy helps 😂

Very inconvenient that Nvivo likes to crash my computer in the middle of coding. Hope this isn’t a sign my computer needs an upgrade; wasn’t planning on that until I graduate!

What I want to do: bake all day and listen to Christmas music

What I’m going to likely do: code data and clean my floors. Maybe also with Christmas music but my kid has some STRONG opinions about what he’ll listen to 😂

The small human, big human, and furry baby were both very excited to have me back! Done with conference travel until ACTFL in 2025; which means I should probably make time to get some papers to journals before this baby comes in spring!

Would have absolutely killed for the MI-BRIDGE curriculum that centers Black students and Black Spanish speakers worldwide when I was in the classroom. What an amazing resource! #actfl24

I didint anticipate our session to be standing room only, but I’m delighted by the turnout and excited we got folks thinking about switching our mentality from world language teachers to bilingual educators #ACTFL2024
