As US climate data-gathering is gutted, Australian forecasting is now at real risk
For decades, Australia has relied on data from US satellites, floats and monitoring programs. Planned deep cuts put Australian forecasting at risk

Woodside’s North West Shelf approval is by no means a one-off. Here are 6 other giant gas projects to watch
Despite warnings of a climate catastrophe, a slew of polluting gas projects are either poised to begin or lie firmly in industry’s sights.

It does not matter where Australian fossil fuels are burned - here or overseas - their impacts are global, and will hit Australia hard through more climate and weather extremes.
Private company profit now that will cost Australia’s next generations massively in dollars, lives and livelihoods.

Hi - I'd like to share this story of what is happening at NOAA GFDL, where some of my colleagues and I worked until the mass firings at NOAA last week.

Widespread severe weather is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service will work 24/7 to craft forecasts, maintain Doppler radars, and issue life-saving warnings to keep you safe—all while the White House issues repeated threats to fire them.

I’m a federal employee, a research meteorologist at a NOAA lab (OAR-NSSL). I still have my job tonight. Many of my NOAA colleagues and many more of my fellow civil servants don’t. I want to share what people like me do. Instead of doomscrolling, maybe we can learn what civil service looks like.

Anytime a storm is brewing, your local forecasters are getting the latest data from NOAA. As the agency faces an uncertain future, one thing's for sure: for-profit companies would struggle to replicate NOAA's weather-forecasting prowess.
For-Profit Companies Can’t Easily Replace NOAA’s Weather-Forecasting Prowess
Replicating the abilities of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fleet of weather satellites would take time and a lot of money—and expose private companies to a large amount of…
