One of my formative political experiences was waiting in lines just to apply for rental apartments in Vancouver in the 2010s, getting rejected, seeing people bid up asking prices, and then watching politicians raise the alarm about "vacant units."

It's pretty funny that we had to invent a whole new term to describe substitution being a thing for housing of varying levels of quality.
Building market-rate/luxury housing relieves pressure on rents in lower-end housing. This is because absent the new luxury housing, wealthy people will move into older homes displacing lower income families. This process is called filtering. www.planetizen.com/news/2024/03...
How ‘Filtering’ Opens Up Affordable Housing
An analysis of 12 U.S. cities found that new market-rate construction often leads to more affordable units becoming available, but the effect varies across housing markets.

Look, if you can't promote your message as a scientist with data on your side without acting neutral you're just bad at rhetoric.
“Scientists should stop trying to be neutral & instead embrace their values,”says a group of top climate scientists, including @katharinehayhoe.com (who I co-curated the Pack below with). The neutrality myth is harming the reputation of science right when we need it most. www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks...

love the replies and quotes that are some version of “actually the real problem is [insert something that doesn’t require anyone to build anything]”
The take I am most certain of that gets me in the most trouble is just "The reason homes are so expensive is because there are not enough of them, so we really really really need to build more of them."

This is like claiming that 57 coffee roasters are responsible for 80% of coffee consumed

Strictly true, but conveniently absolves me from the espresso I just bought

My latest WSJ is a theme I've been hitting a lot lately--about tradeoffs and the conservative vice of only worrying about costs and the liberal vice of thinking everything is a benefit.
Opinion | Left and Right Alike Are Blind to Trade-Offs
Where liberals see only benefits, conservatives see only costs. Economics is about choosing wisely.

The rise in left/liberal types emotionally investing in misinformation is, I think, a bad omen.

most people don’t realize that having a readily available, even kinda-accurate answer to “how many Asian women under 40 with a college degree live in Pomona” is a world-historic achievement that requires an industrial scale, heaven & earth moving effort. it is on par with CERN. not hyperbole.
nothing will make you appreciate FRED more than trying to use non-US public stats databases
