Joelle, she/her, AuDHD, cottage industry garment worker, sewing, knitting, spinning, plants, libraries, books, games. Not a fascist trad wife -- I just dress like a story book, and like baking bread and reading Tolkien.
While I'm monologuing about undergarments, I'll hop on my soapbox for a sec:

Linen is superior to cotton, and wool is superior to any "performance tech" fabric made from petroleum.

Linen needs way less water to grow and holds up well to washing. Both wool and linen are biodegradable, too.

It's so much better for sweat management and protects my outer clothes as well as the bras.

I don't have to wash either as often, since they don't have much/any contact with my skin.

Some strategies of the past are with revisiting to see if they'll be applicable for one's current situation.

I also need to sew some undershirts.*

I'll make them in the same pattern as the bodices on all my dresses, but longer, and with a slit at the neck line for ease of boob adjustments.

* I wear my bra over the undershirt like my ancestors would have done with their chemises and stays.

Tomorrow I'm going to lower the underarms and the side boning. I feel like I'm being lifted by the armpits.

Then I'll wear it for another day or so before I make any other adjustments.

I'm probably going to add some sort of waist adjustment.

I feel so small! But small deeds may be the cure for apathy and despair, as they say.

Jesse's Aunt is in a quilt guild that make quilts to give away, and I'm going to give them the bulk of my mother's fabric hoard to do with what they will.

I may yet try to make myself a Lengberg style undergarment for support, but I need to solve my immediate comfort needs before I try my hand at experimental archaeology.

All this to say: I hope I didn't just waste $80 on a bra.

I altered it once to make the cups less bullet-y, and I think I can alter the underarms to not chafe.

I've already found some underpants makers (Woxer and Pure Snug) who make long enough boxer briefs, so I don't have to learn how to sew those.

I've gathered some bra-making supplies, but I don't think it's something I'm getting around to any time soon.

I've decided I need a longline style, and those are expensive. I purchased one a few years ago, and I think it can be altered to be more comfortable.

I keep trying to look up places to take it to have it re-enameled, but I'm coming up short. It's still useable, and the interior is perfect. It's just the outside that's damaged.

Much of it is superwash and therefore easy to throw in the laundry if people have access to those facilities.

I'm sure the need is greater than my two hands can mend, but a little warmth is what I can give.

Take LoTR. The reason evil exists in the books is because the creator is singing new creations into existence and Melkor wants to co-opt the song. It’s the reason Sauron’s armies are twisted forms of elves. The evil in LoTR CANNOT CREATE, they can go “this thing looks like this other thing”
The far right is obsessed with Lord of the Rings and Musk keeps posting about "hobbits" because modern scientific racism owes more to fantasy worlds and gaming systems than genetic science, and they see both as effective mediums for right-wing propaganda www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...
