The “new” library in downtown Minneapolis (2006) was designed to eventually have a planetarium on top! There were people advocating for that even fairly recently! The science museum doesn’t have one either. So it’s good that the Bell Museum finally got one to go along with their bell collection.
When opened in 1960, the Minneapolis Planetarium had 1200 visitors a day and held the distinction of being the only one, outside of Alexandria Egypt, located inside a library. When torn down in 2002, it was reimagined in the U of M Bell Museum which today boasts North America’s first ‘seamless’ dome

There’s no doubt that many, many library workers care for their patrons deeply. But please don’t valorize the profession.

It’s the concept that makes it good, not the execution, which is often flawed.
