The good news is the doctors who have submitted to the Wakley prize from juniors to consultants echo this sentiment - the had news is it exposes the rot in the centre of a discipline that is meant to above all else help
Lifelong academics have long accepted fundamentally broken systems, and taught trainees to do the same. Far too many are simply adjusting to our putrid current NIH. Some deep introspection needs to accompany this kind of organizing. Because ECRs (like me) with options are already abandoning ship.
Scientists must learn to join larger pro-democracy and people's movements, coalitions. Our science training may not have prepared us for such work, but we can no longer sit in the safety of our labs and expect the world to get better

One of the oddest things about my favourite youtubers in general is that they will go dark for 13 months or so then drop a PhD level almost 5 h video on the most esoteric shit imaginable and I love it every time

Followed a girl around at my (ahem) all girls school like a lovesick puppy aged 13, but all girls feel like that? Never quite felt like a girl when puberty started. Cut off my first pubic hairs with scissors. Told my mum I think I liked girls as well at 14
I first awkwardly brought up what I now know was dysphoria at 17. Hooked up with guys in high school but never id’ed as bi back then. Came out as “MTF” (lol) to a few friends at 27, ran away from it, came out to my parents during a breakdown at 29, HRT at 30, I’m 43 now. Not all lines are linear.

I first came out as trans at 22, then detransitioned within a year. I came out to a few people as nonbinary at 26 as kind of a compromise with myself; I finally came out as a trans woman a second time at 34.

One of the things I love most about my colleagues is that we were collectively asked how the in-house AI slop machine could be used and we all simply said "no, that's stupid we will not do that"
