I hope everyone knows that it's very easy for any social content platform, including Bluesky, to be a misery machine and that if you aren't intentional about it, they will absolutely decrease the positive impact you have on the world while making you less happy.

in all seriousness: one of the most important philosophical questions of our time
It does seem to be getting out of hand.

How does a society reestablish the cultural taboo against lying out out of your ass?

Qud is the only videogame that captures the bit in The Drawing of the Three where Roland gets the shit beaten out of him by a lobster and loses multiple fingers and a toe
Caves of Qud is great because you can create an absolute badass of a character like "teleporting psychic gunslinger" and within a couple hours they're riddled with fungal infections and being eaten by crabs at the bottom of a well

Lovely and heartbreaking thread that captures where a lot of us scientists are, emotionally, in this moment.
When I was in graduate school, nothing in the world felt more important to me than publishing a paper in the scientific literature. It was not about getting a job or competing with my peers. It was about being part of something vastly larger than myself and profoundly meaningful human history.

It’s unfortunate that some studios are mandating new hires be in-office only, because it just locks out so much talent and makes job searching that much more difficult and demoralizing.

I am a climate scientist and this is correct ⬇️
Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

Ahaha mine is basically the inverse of this!

Friction in games owns, actually, and creates so much space for experiences outside of the “it’s so over / we’re so back” power fantasy paradigm!!!
Being overburdened so you walk real slow, or your stamina to run drops hard, is not even remotely fun.

Let me hoard shiny things.

Yellow paint discourse!

Player derision for yellow paint is genuine and fair. It solves a different problem that many players also hate, which is getting lost and being unable to proceed.

There’s a trick here though:
