I had a coworker whose dad fled Egypt in the 70’s, I think. (pardon my ignorance if its obvi)
The story went that dad and his friends all went to the US embassy to flee. The line was huge. Dad poked his head into the empty Canadian embassy *and they offered him tea* so he became Egyptian-Canadian.

I think the goal should be for politicians to try to efficiently collect and handle what a country needs to support those most in need, so they can live their lives in a meaningful way.
