Sadly, Journal accounts have flooded #chemsky, likely causing the noticeable drop in human posts. Please try consciously to keep this place alive by muting all the paper bots and re-engage with the scientist's posts here. It would be a pity if chemsky was lost.

Our group currently collaborates over Teams, which is ok but not great. Are there any, prefferably open source, alternatives? We need chat, files sharing (>200 gb), notes (OneNote similar). Possibility to co-write/collaborate on docs would be great (which Teams suck for when someone is on Linux...)

Large-scale synthesis of explosive compounds?

Reactions in acetone at 60 °C higher than the boiling temperature of acetone?

Reflux at temperatures lower than the boiling point of the solvent?

This paper has it all!

Check out the new preprint by @arbitraryeffect.bsky.social and myself!

common knowledge among chemists:

compressed gas cylinders basically last forever. some date back to WW2. those used in Nazi Germany (Linde) were marked with swastikas.

after the war, the swastikas were defaced into "windowpanes" ⊞ — you can still find such cylinders in the wild today.

Is it just me who feels funny about attending conferences in the US going forward, when I typically would avoid other autocratic regimes?

Anyone who ever had a student do something with AI knows that we are lightyears from being replaced.
AI is advancing so quickly that data on how it affects chemistry-related jobs are sparse. It is “complete speculation at this point” to know whether AI will create—or take—chemists’ jobs, says @acs.org: cen.acs.org/business/inf... #AI #chemsky🧪 #scinews
Artificial intelligence—the great job maker or taker?
AI can deliver huge benefits to chemistry, but some also worry about the turbulence it might bring to the job market

What's the logic between login on to Outlook mobile requiring using Outlook mobile to generate a single use code which has to be verified by Outlook to approve the login. I think there is a fallacy somewhere hidden in there.

The past days we watched 'Thou Shalt Not Steal' on TV (great show, highly recommend). And my wife looked up the soundtrack afterwards to ID the Slim Dusty song played throughout. I want to believe this is the year that she will embrace country music after more than 10 years of firm opposition.

I really hope all scientists and people living in a fact-based reality who still voted Trump realize what they have done.
More from inside NIH:

Per a source with knowledge, for all internal research (of which there is like $10 billion worth or so), ALL purchasing shut down as of yesterday.

That means gloves, reagents, anything involved with lab work, which means a lot of that work will stop.

Yep. We have been out of contract with Elsevier at MIT for 4.5 years now, at substantial savings to the Institute. Happy to share our experience with any library interested in following suit.
Exclusive: ‘Lots more’ university libraries could drop big subscription deals.

After several institutions drop Elsevier deals, senior librarians say rising costs and severe financial strain have reached a “tipping point”.

Sad to hear about Lynch. When it comes to visual enretainment, him and Haneke has had the biggest impact on me. Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway. Every rewatch brings something new. 😥
