As Trump deploys the National Guard against his own citizens, the importance of protecting our own human rights from abuse at the hands of govt has never been clearer.
But *still* the Tories push to strip us of our protections, in a desperate bid for power for themselves.

Human rights Sir, The Conservative proposal to repudiate the European Convention on Human Rights is not a technical reform (letters, Jun 7; news & leading article, Jun 6). It is a profound rupture in the postwar order that Britain, using its soft power, helped to build. As a founding signatory of the 1949 Treaty of London, the UK undertook to "accept the principles of the rule of law and of the enjoyment by all persons within its jurisdiction of human rights and fundamental freedoms" (Article 3). These are not optional. To repudiate the ECHR would lead only in one direction: withdrawal, or even expulsion, from the Council of Europe. Who benefits? Certainly not the British people, whose rights and freedoms the ECHR has long protected. But autocrats such as Presidents Putin and Xi would benefit, as well as others who seek to dismantle the international legal order that Britain helped to shape. Winston Churchill knew better. But his successors in today's Conservative Party are not his heirs. He urged us to rise to the level of events. Yet we see the same pattern as we saw with Brexit: strategy subordinated to spectacle, judgment to gesture.
