Living fine on a single salary in a first world country with a universal health care system and gun bans watching Americans scream how those DON'T WORK and MY RIGHTS and SOCIALISM while they actively keep so many around the world safe and healthy like ??? y'all are so dumb I can't fucking stand it

【NAKASENDO】Shout out to the #cats of the Nakasendo, between Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku. They were all beautiful and practically perfect, 9.5/10, my visit was greatly improved by their presence. -.5 for always refusing to pose in front of the lovely townscape, though... 📷 11.18.24 #japan

【KYOTO・SONYO-IN TEMPLE】I had heard about the unique ceiling at this #temple for a while, so I finally went… the contrast between the colorful chestnut tiger butterfly motifs and classic ink dragon, the stained glass panel behind the Jizo… a lot of neat contrasts here 📷 11.23.24 #japan #photography

【KURASHIKI・ACHI SHRINE】I suppose it was a very silly thing to do, but I saw someone else had picked up the quince fruit from the ground and placed them in lanterns and on torii gates… so I picked one up and put it on the left guardian lion-dog. Now they match. 📷 11.27.24 #japan #shrine #photography

After 6 months of work, 4 VCRs, and an official translation, I am pleased to share my RF rip of Yukio Ninagawa's staging of Euripides's Medea, a tape which has never been transferred. archive.org/details/ojo....

Incredulously watching a woman in front of me at Minamiza theater whip out giant Horai 551 pork buns during the Kaomise kabuki performance intermission… #豚まんテロ was a viral hashtag for a reason… 🤨 Is this when I fully turn on the tourists and become a conservative Japanese troll.. #rizurants

This big hawk moth accidentally flew in my house, but it let me hold it while I googled it… and also let me laugh at the fact that it’s Japanese name is literally “shrimp pattern hawk moth”… cutie… #japan #insects #bug #moth

I have never been this stressed planning 紅葉狩り in my liiiiife… between global warming turning fall foliage into free fall and my work being a butt about letting me take days off, everything I’m doing is so gd last minute… scrambling to find a rental car just so I can go to Hofu… lemme go… #rizurants

【SEKI-JUKU】I really want to explore more of the old shukuba (post towns)… this one had a bevy of cute cafes, antique shops, a temple with great wood carvings, and several preserved inns and homes to explore. There were all sorts of little details to catch the eye. 📷 24.10.6 #japan #photography

Took two days off work to spend my birthday exploring Kurashiki and looking at autumn foliage with my mother, who’s visiting from North Carolina. A good day! Goodbye, 35!

【GYOKI-JI TEMPLE】This temple in Kaizu, Gifu, had an amazing collection of hell scrolls and some impressively painted coffered ceilings… but the best part was the view! The high elevation made it seem as if you were looking down on the city from a temple in the clouds. 📷 24.10.6 #japan #photography

Some people have Mariah Carey… some people have decorations showing up in a certain store… my “oh god, Christmas is coming” sign is… the hideous yellow tweedy bird tree in Zest Oike… GOOD ON THEM FOR CHARITY WORK but I’m sorry, I’m a yellow hater, that shade doesn’t belong on that tree!!!

【MONET’S POND】I can see how this pond in Gifu got its name… it’s only 80cm deep, fed by a spring, and the base contains quartz sand, which I guess all contributes to the clarity. Would like to see it at peak water lily season some time, that must be even more beautiful! 📷 24.10.5 #japan #photography

When you decide to trek a stretch of the Nakasendo because your friend assures you that part is so easy and no more than two hours… only to emerge three and a half hours later clutching your nitroglycerin spray in hand… omg u fast-paced hike-loving liars…

【DOROGAWA ONSEN】for those looking to get away for a weekend in Kansai… in addition to the lovely little traditional townscape packed with hot spring accommodations, there’s also hiking trails, Ryusen-ji Temple, and two explorable caves within walking distance #rizurecs #photography #japan

Hirohiko Araki on the evil of AI art in today's "world of con artists". He worries about the impact AI-generated fakes will have on manga. He recently saw an AI image and was shocked at its similarity to his art style.

I’d like to propose we start choosing prime ministers via poetry contest. If it was good enough to judge talent in the Heian period it’s good enough for me.
A viral post has pointed out that Prime Minister Ishiba's haiku about Nara persimmons broke with the pattern of Prime Ministers Abe, Suga, and Kishida, who repeatedly used the same dull template of "When I eat persimmons, [insert new phrase here], the town of Nara."

I dragged Ablaze Publishing’s crappy AI/machine translation of Sumiyoshi Ryo’s manga “Centaurs” (人馬) so hard that they had to actually do their gd jobs a bit better in the second volume. Not that they actually released a statement or took any responsibility, but… a lady can only do so much! 🤷‍♀️

I don’t tend to follow much contemporary art, but the Chiharu Shiota exhibition at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka really captivated me… a bit hard to explain without being there, how the threads would throw off depth perception and disorient, but also connect… but very cool #japan #art
