This is an almost shockingly wise essay. I'm glad I've finally read it.
There Is No Mary Problem in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’
George’s vision of his wife without him is essential to the film, but critics continue to miss its true—and profound—meaning.

Yesterday morning, I made a pilgrimage to the NYC memorial park bench of MAD magazine founder and publisher William M. Gaines. After nailing down the location, I recorded this video so you'd be able to do the same. May you someday make a pilgrimage of your own! youtu.be/ifQa-7db9b0

Actually, this isn’t true. No such play or movie was ever produced.
'Gaslighting' comes from the title of a 1938 play and the movies based on that play.

The plots of which involve a man attempting to make his wife believe that she is going insane.

i love the very obvious moral tale of aligning with evil people to become powerful and then losing everything and destroying yourself

like legitimately it's like a fairytale written with obvious lessons in mind for children to learn

Still up, but endangered.
Some sad confirmation from @bcgl.bsky.social while I was at UW last week—the National Digital Newspaper Program—which builds Chronicling America—has been shut down

Historical newspapers are probably the archival material most used by the general public—for genealogy, local history—it’s such a loss

Phylis Haver as Roxie Hart, the jazz killer, in CHICAGO (1927), a sexy tale of getting away with murder.

Cecil B. DeMille was the uncredited director because KING OF KINGS was still making bank and he didn't want "Cecil B. DeMille's CHICAGO" to immediately follow it on the marquee.

(Spoilers). Watched the recent Undercrank Productions release of Tom Mix1922 Sky High. I was expecting a good cowboy picture, but got instead a contemporary stunt action packed thriller. Including Mix being lowered into the Grand Canyon by a biplane! (1/2)

Currently reading The Invisible Bullet by Max Rittenberg. complete collection of his mystery series featuring Magnum, Scientific Consultant, from 1911 to 1915. Not finished yet, but the stories so far are fun. Typically they are more gimmick and puzzle stories, and definitely not character studies.

I’ve been told by a professional humor writer, that I should not give up my day job. I looked at them and said “I’m retired”

Ok, I hear that folks exist here on Bluesky who rather not see political posts, so here I plan to do only posts on entertainment. Although I may need to up my joke telling as well ….
