Imagine a world where the Labour Party leadership *aren't* cowards. Good job Ed.

Sometimes it surprises me that there isn't more of a concerted lobbying effort from the non-attention parts of the economy to regulate the attention parts. If you aren't making money from targeted ads but something actually important you'd surely be a bit pissed off.

My best theory for what is happening here is that reading code is harder and more time consuming than writing it. AI increases the amount of code that developers need to read, because if we don't review the output properly we could well end up introducing bugs or vulnerabilities.
metr.org METR @metr.org · Jul 10
We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

Is doom scrolling really rotting our brains? The evidence is getting harder to ignore

www.theguardian.com/...

Many have asked for my take on this. So, is it another example of "I have concluded that my gut feelings are correct and I'm cherry picking 'evidence' to support it"?

Yes, yes it is

‘Brain rot’ is the Oxford word of the year – a fitting choice, given the startling impact the internet is having on our grey matter, says journalist Siân Boyle

If people only ditched X for Bluesky because they don’t like Musk it would have happened ages ago. X became terrible under Musk’s leadership. Bluesky hit critical mass and became a viable alternative. Those 2 things are way more significant IMO.

Me: coaster layouts that are just a succession of airtime hills are boring.

Also me: the best element on Gotham City Escape is a regular old airtime hill.

I don't know if VelociCoaster just wasn't running that well when I rode it 2 months ago, but Gotham City Escape was closer to what I imagined VC would be than VC is.

This coffee drinker quite likes the sound of this pulley system...
Sometimes I wonder what motivates non-coffee drinkers to get out of bed.

Probably some sort of pulley system.

If you bring central London to a halt in order to campaign against catastrophic climate change then you're a "barmy" eco "fanatic" who deserves to be locked up.

If you do the same to hang on to your multimillion pound inheritance tax exemption then you're a brave freedom fighter defying the odds

You know who hasn't had this degree of media support for their financial interests? Disabled people, poor people with more than two kids, public sector workers (after all that clapping for the NHS). I'm not usually a 'blame the media' person but seriously - this is mad

My initial reaction to the Merlin/Minecraft deal was "Is this another Angry Birds Land situation where they've gone for an outdated IP?" Then I looked up Minecraft's player numbers, it is very much not that, the game is still super popular, I'm just old and not clued in. 😅

So upset I’ll never get to ride Kingda Ka, makes me wish I’d become an enthusiast when I was younger…

I can console myself with Stealth having the punchier launch I guess. 😐

What we need in difficult economic times is an experienced businessman. Preferably one with a long list of frauds and insolvencies. The craziness is fine, because he’ll have sensible people to restrain him. Just like last time when he sacked them all and they warned the world he was dangerous.
