Schools Week have devised a quiz!

Higher or Lower! Can you spot which statement in the Ofsted framework is for the higher grade?!

Ofsted quiz: Can you spot a ‘strong’ rating from a ‘secure’ one?
Ofsted's proposed 'toolkits' have been criticised as being too unclear - but do they make sense?

2/5. I hope this says more about the subjectivity of the criteria and less about my leadership (or literacy)!

Great quote from @dylanwiliam @CharteredColl 'If we direct our energies not on evaluating teachers but on improving them, we are far more likely to improve the quality of education that our pupils receive'

My favourite new substack is Beyond the Frame, from my incredibly talented colleague and friend @sam-fitzpatrick.bsky.social

Sam offers genuinely unique perspectives on so many aspects of education and leadership.

Teachers: I heard that if you haven't yet hoovered the house from top to bottom, and decluttered the useful drawer, they will take away your QTS.

I'm getting some pushback on my post about banning smartphones. Lot of it is "this is a moral panic don't ban stuff it'll be fine.'
A key thing to understand here though is many young people themselves don't like what phones are doing to them. This is different to rock music or video games etc.

NF on 'two-tier justice': "If you're middle aged and white, you are likely to get a worse sentence than if you're from a different origin and do something violent."

HC: "Do you think that's true?"

NF: "Whether that's true or not, that's the perception."

“Infinite” in maths and “definite” in not maths are related in that definite stems from “bounded within limits” (think “defined”) and infinite means unbounded without limits. So now you’ll never spell “definite” incorrectly again. You’re welcome. 😉

Turn and Talk is very popular right now, I see it in most lessons I go to.

HOWEVER, in 95% of cases I watch it and think "that lesson would have been better without it to be honest"

Why?

Today I was about to write a blog about student autonomy and accountability in corridor conversations but was really glad to find I have already written it!!

One of the many great points made by @pepsmccrea.bsky.social at #REd24 yesterday was that in the dark days many of us were enthusiastically doing brain gym / VAK / discovery learning but we were unable to identify that it wasn't a good idea. Evaluating whether teaching is effective is hard.

How good is @pepsmccrea.bsky.social? So many things to take away from his presentation today. I hope I can do it justice when I share my reflections with colleagues next week.
