Traditional institutions using anime to connect to younger generations may represent a “conquest of cute”, much like Thomas Frank’s “conquest of cool” in advertising in the 1960s, argues @brandonazheng. #anime #Luce #umamusume #USMC @bakerinstitute www.bakerinstitute.org/research/con...

IMO many Americans don't even buy guns for personal protection or to defend themselves against a tyrannical government. They simply have a shopping addiction

I think the amazing thing in the US is that people forget that law is willed into being by the people as they comply with it on a daily basis. It does not exist on its own. It is not like the laws of physics. It is a merely human thing

A look back at Voice of America, as the Trump administration shutters the broadcaster
The Trump administration is gutting an agency that funds Voice of America. For decades, the broadcaster reached audiences in countries that often offered no other free media -- including China.

Had strong sense at least the timing of Trump's illegal shuttering of Voice of America was triggered by his annoyance at a question from a VOA journo. Source flags to me that the EO was so hastily put together they literally forgot to complete the last sentence. www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/...

It seems I've also been placed on leave, just like the rest of my VOA colleagues.

Truth is, I can't know for sure, because when I woke up this morning in Seoul, I'd already been locked out of all VOA-related systems and accounts.
My colleagues and our broadcasts, devoted to telling America’s story to the world — honestly, fairly and with an unwavering commitment to the truth, are being silenced this weekend. open.substack.com/pub/newsguy/...

One of the core beliefs I've adopted in the last few years is that we generally underrate how goofy and stupid the American past was and that being attentive to that helps us see continuities with the present. It's actually not obvious we live in dumber times. Every day tests this belief anew.
