It is interesting that Russell Vought kept Walter the NINDS IC director around for so long.
(The renewal requests are going to the White House. This is all Vought and the project 2025 people.)

Interesting because they fired Diana Bianchi at NICHD, and.. 🧵 1/
More news (not good) from NIH

The renewal request from National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke Director Walter Koroshetz has been denied.

I guess the NIH_leadership™ needed another position to fill with their time-tested recruitment process.

NIH has for decades used a rigorous recruitment process to hire its top scientists, the institute directors.

The Trump NIH is changing that. They’ve already installed one political hire this way, reportedly a friend of JD Vance.

This post describes the process. Demand the Trump people follow it.
Demand that NIH Maintain the Scientific Credibility of its Institute Directors
The institute directors at NIH are top scientific leaders who in principle can redirect grant money as they please. The Trump NIH must not install new directors without a real hiring process.

Thune is a fucking idiot. This was their way of showing the voting public that the Senate Republicans are willfully obstructing any reasonable deal that will lead to reopening of the government. It’s their fault it’s shut and they are standing in the way of it reopening.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune rejected a Democratic offer to reopen the government and extend expiring health care subsidies for a year. Thune said he thinks the offer is an indication that Democrats are “feeling the heat.”

He must have been out of the country on Tuesday.

Director Bhattacharya "Let's fund emerging investigators"

Yeah, who's the idiot running NIH who allowed 15% or few fewer early stage investigators be funded in FY2025 compared to FY2024?

Jeffries: "Thune is divorced from reality. It's a clown show over in the Senate. 15 times you bring the same partisan Republican spending bill to the Senate floor expecting a different result? That's the classic definition of legislative insanity. Has no ability to actually negotiate in good faith."

“Doctor” LaDumbfuck is at it again it seems. Why has my home state turned out to be so fucking embarrassing?
LADAPO: I'm not alone. It just so happens that most of the people who have largely microphones tend to align with the American Medical Association and American Academy of Pediatrics

TAPPER: I'm kinda shocked you have not done any projection or data analysis of what this is going to mean for kids

“The Death of Public Health”

Jonas Salk saved millions with a polio vaccine. He gave it away to help humanity. Today, venal and yes, evil billionaires—Koch to Musk to Peter Thiel—are fully behind destroying American society for profit. They want you poor, sick, and desperate. We must stop them.

Maybe both?

My quote of the day

If you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press. And without it, I am afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That's how dictators get started.

It is my job to support PIs with their research plans, to help them find the right study section for their aims, and to tell them about the #ADRD milestones. It is not my job to obfuscate award paylines and funding priorities.
I’m hearing chatter that senior NIH leadership received an email from Memoli Friday morning castigating NCI for posting their payline with attribution to MYF.

I hear the email said something about how we don’t need to inform the community.

So much for transparency!

Dear Vinay Prasad, don’t let the door hit you on the way out, you disgrace.

May your shame last forever.
Lol. He grifted so hard, even the grifters wanted nothing to do with him.

“Dr. Prasad did not want to be a distraction to the great work of the FDA in the Trump administration and has decided to return to California and spend more time with his family,” HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon told STAT.

Mark my words, we are going to see fewer therapeutics and devices approved because of this nonsense. Private investors HEAVILY rely on non-dilutive government funding to de-risk early stage technologies. People who claim they can step in for the government know nothing about biotech investing.
So this happened... Useful if you want to make economic (and health) arguments about the importance of NIH.

Imagine how weak and afraid you must be to put the #EPA139 on admin leave for calling you out… to push for the end a classic comedy show just because it is critical of you. Who’s the snowflake?

They think this kind of thing will silence us.

But it won’t.
